Artist Lewis Lavoie held a mural painting workshop with a group of students at Parkview School, Edmonton, in April. Lavoie gave each student a few tiles, a paintbrush, a limited palette and the Chinese zodiac theme. Two hours later, a multitude of small paintings emerged with a harmony of colour and theme. Lavoie showed students that their efforts of individual creativity could result in a collective masterpiece. When Lavoie assembles all the paintings in a particular order, a Chinese zodiac animal will be revealed.
The Chinese Zodiac Mural Project was initiated by the Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association. The goal is to create 12 murals of the animals in the Chinese zodiac.
